PKS Italia APS, the Italian association dedicated to promoting research and supporting families of individuals with Pallister-Killian Syndrome (PKS), is pleased to announce the opening of a Research Grant for innovative projects in the field of rare diseases, with a special focus on Pallister-Killian Syndrome.

Grant Objective

The grant is intended to fund a research project that employs advanced technologies for genomic characterization, aiming to deepen our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the clinical manifestations of PKS. This funding seeks to support studies using cutting-edge genomic analysis methods not yet included in standard diagnostic workflows, with an integrated approach to analyse complex chromosomal rearrangements—such as those involving chromosome 12—and their clinical implications.

Available Funding

A total of €20,000 is available for the first year. There is the possibility of extending the project into a second year with an additional €20,000, subject to evaluation of first-year results and approval by PKS Italia APS and its Scientific Committee.

Eligibility Requirements

• Research centres, hospitals, and universities with proven expertise in genomics and rare diseases
• Interdisciplinary collaborations between research groups and clinical centres

Evaluation Criteria

1. Innovativeness: use of advanced genomic analysis technologies
2. Scientific relevance: contribution to understanding the genotype–phenotype relationship in PKS
3. Clinical impact: potential to improve management and treatment of PKS patients
4. Feasibility: skills of the proposing team and access to necessary technologies
5. Collaborations: synergies between research groups and clinical reference centres

Proposal Review

All applications will be reviewed and scored by the PKS Italia APS Scientific Committee, which will select the winning project based on the criteria above.

• A detailed project description (max 10 pages)
• Curriculum vitae of the project leader
• Detailed budget and funding plan
• Detailed work plan for the first year, including objectives and expected outcomes

Extension to Second Year

At the end of the first year, recipients may submit a detailed report on results achieved and a proposal for the second year. PKS Italia APS will review these materials to decide on awarding second-year funding.
